Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Use (ATOD) Interest Group of Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM)
The Alcohol, Tobacco, and other Drug Use (ATOD) Interest Group is made up of general internists with educational, clinical or research interests in alcohol, tobacco, and/or other drug use, or use disorders. Members of this group collaborate to advance academic endeavors. For over 20 years, this growing group has sponsored educational presentations at national and regional meetings, stimulated joint research agendas, fostered collaborations and mentoring relationships, represented SGIM on policy issues in the field of addiction, and developed warm friendships between colleagues. We also collaborate with other SGIM interest groups to sponsor updates and workshops. The group is interested in attracting new members and has traditionally been a useful vehicle for junior faculty to develop connections with established faculty in the field. The group is a potent force improving the quality of care and moving the care of individuals with substance use into mainstream internal medicine. In addition to meeting at SGIM National Meeting, we also meet annually in the fall at the Association for Medical Education and Research in Substance Abuse (AMERSA) national meeting.
