The Social Work Special Interest Group is comprised of social workers as well as other behavioral health professionals, (psychologists, mental health counselors and addiction counselors and peer coaches), who have an interest in the advancement of education, research, clinical work and policy in the field of addictions. We offer leadership, mentorship, and guidance to individuals, groups, and organizations regarding addiction. For the past ten years, we have come together to discuss relevant topics, network, and collaborate on special projects that nurture and promote the roles of educator, researcher, and clinician among social workers and those in related fields. Some past projects include: drafting social work competencies on assessment and brief intervention through Project MAINSTREAM, writing columns for the NASW newsletter about the prevalence and nature of substance abuse among clients in social service agencies, contributing to AMERSA’s Strategic Plan, as well as exchanging syllabi from specialized and general social work courses. We take special interest in welcoming and fostering the growth of new members to AMERSA.
