Medication for Substance Use Disorders

This SIG is for individuals who are involved or who have a special interest in Medication for Addiction Treatment (MAT) for a variety of substance use disorders, including but not limited to opioid use disorders, alcohol use disorders, and stimulant use disorders.

Purpose: To bring together professionals from all disciplines to discuss ideas and partake in special projects related to research, clinical interventions, teaching strategies, and/or policy implementation relevant to MAT for SUD.

Here are some examples of how individuals from different disciplines can get involved:

Physicians/Physician Assistants: development of teaching strategies to help medical students and residents understand the benefits and importance of MAT; development of best practices for MAT prescribing

Nurses: education of other nurses in best practices for working effectively with the MAT population, particularly when daily dosing/contact is a necessity

Social Workers/Psychologists/Substance Use Counselors/Allied Health Professionals: development of best practice guidelines regarding clinical and allied health interventions for individuals in MAT

Dentists: screening for individuals in MAT; prescribing guidelines for individuals in MAT post-surgery and other invasive procedures

Public Health Practitioners and Health Educators: research and education related to infection control and other public health hazards that individuals in MAT commonly encounter

Pharmacists: development of new pharmacological agents to be used for MAT; development of best practice guidelines for utilization of prescription drug monitoring programs in MAT; connecting harm reduction efforts to OTP; analysis, implementation and expansion of collaborative practice agreements for MAT.
