“Our Letter to the Editor comments on the need for increased awareness and training regarding opioid misuse, pain management, and addiction treatment among physicians who treat adolescents. Given that substance misuse often begins in adolescence, it is a critical time for prevention and intervention for opioid misuse disorders. Through the implementation of evidence-based educational strategies and physician mentorship programs, we can strive for safe and effective opioid prescription to adolescents as well as appropriate management of pain and addiction.”

“This is the first analysis that looks at predictors of SUD treatment in both adolescents and adults in a Medicaid population. We found substantive differences in predictors of treatment initiation and engagement between adults and adolescents, including in gender and race groups, urban vs. rural residence, and presence of a psychiatric diagnosis. These findings suggest that efforts to improve treatment and engagement generally may need to differentiate strategies for adult and adolescent populations. In particular, efforts that may be successful for improving these measures for adult populations may be ineffective for adolescent populations, and, depending on the strategies, could exacerbate existing racial and gender disparities.“

“We describe the current state of the e-cigarette epidemic among youth, which is currently the most rapidly growing trend in substance use among adolescents. This paper warns about some of the most important health risks related to e-cigarette use in adolescents, most of which contain e-cigarettes. Most importantly, we suggest several opportunities for action to help protect prevent or decrease e-cigarette use among youth and avoid losing decades of progress made in the fight against nicotine and tobacco control.”
